A Conversation with Mr. M Jagadish, Chief Technology Officer of Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies

Q1: With the rapid growth of the EV market in India, how is Amara Raja gearing up to meet the demand for advanced battery technologies? Are there plans for partnerships or collaborations to strengthen your position in this space?

As an industry leader, we are proactively meeting the escalating demand for advanced battery technologies in India’s electric vehicle (EV) market through a range of strategic initiatives. Our substantial investment of Rs 9,500 crore has been directed towards the establishment of a state-of-the-art Li-ion cell plant in Telangana. Concurrently, we are in the process of expanding our existing facilities to manufacture battery packs for two-wheeler and three-wheeler EVs.

Our dedicated Research and Development (R&D) team is tirelessly engaged in the creation of next-generation lithium-ion technologies, with a specific focus on providing optimal solutions to the customers in the areas of Energy & Mobility. Furthermore, we have also started exploring other advanced cell chemistries for select applications.

In the realm of collaborations, we have formed strategic alliances with IITs and other premier institutions to set up Centre of Excellences and take up relevant research projects on Advanced Battery Technologies. Additionally, we have made a significant investment in the Log 9 Materials, a Bengaluru-based startup that has a range of cutting-edge batteries and energy storage solutions, and it is also engaged in the development of India’s inaugural lithium-ion cell and has developed the fastest-charging EV battery with InstaCharge technology. ARE&M has also invested in InoBat Auto, a European technology developer and manufacturer of premium innovative batteries for E-mobility. Simultaneously, discussions are underway with prominent global EV players to explore potential joint ventures and technology collaborations.

Q2: With increasing focus on environmental responsibility, how is Amara Raja incorporating sustainable practices in its manufacturing processes and promoting a circular economy for batteries?

In response to the increasing emphasis on environmental responsibility, we are deeply committed to sustainable manufacturing practices and the promotion of a circular economy for batteries. We prioritise the use of 70% recycled lead in our manufacturing processes, significantly reducing our reliance on virgin resources and minimizing mining-related emissions. Our state-of-the-art Circular Solutions Plant, the largest of its kind in India, with a capacity of 1.5 LPTA, focuses on battery recycling, increasing the usage of recycled lead and reducing our dependence on virgin materials. A commendable 96% waste recycling rate underscores our commitment to minimizing environmental impact and optimizing resource use. we continue to reduce our environmental footprint and GHG emissions. We have installed 59.1 MW of renewable energy infra and will commission another 7.5 MW to increase our renewable energy mix. We also have world-class ETPs and Zero Liquid Discharge systems along with water efficiency improvement initiatives to further reduce our water consumption. Our closed-loop system for lead ensures optimal use through recovery and reuse in production, minimizing waste generation. We have also commissioned a ground and roof mounted solar plant. We also implement Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for responsible battery management, actively collecting and recycling used batteries to reduce pollution and environmental impact. As a company, we are steadfast in its goals to further increase recycled raw materials in production, improve battery recycling collection rates, increase the share of renewable energy, and continually seek innovative ways to minimize waste and enhance resource efficiency.

Q3: Amidst technological advancements, what key skills do you see becoming essential for your workforce in the coming years? What initiatives are you taking to bridge the skill gap and prepare for the future of the power industry?

Our Amara Raja Energy & Mobility business envisions several key skills becoming essential for our workforce. These include expertise in advanced Li-ion Cell chemistries, battery packs, battery management systems, thermal management, efficiency optimization, circular economy practices, renewable energy integration, data analytics, and sustainability.

At Amara Raja we are constantly on the lookout for good talent and for the newly carved business of cell and battery pack manufacturing we are recruiting people with international exposure.

We are poised to bridge the evolving skill gap through a comprehensive set of HR initiatives. The company aims to enhance skills through upskilling and reskilling programs, collaborating with universities, and training institutions for relevant technology courses and conducting internal training programs. A strategic focus on talent acquisition involves targeted recruitment campaigns, partnerships with engineering colleges, and competitive compensation packages. Emphasizing a culture of learning, we encourage continuous development, experimentation, and cross-functional collaboration. These commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected in efforts to build a diverse workforce, fostering creativity and innovation. Q4: Beyond traditional areas, what new markets or applications are you targeting for your power storage solutions? Are there plans to expand beyond India’s borders?

At Amara Raja we always look at doing things better for the industry and for people. As the first step in our foray into the New Energy space, we set up the Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies (ARACT), a fully owned subsidiary of ARE&M. ARACT focuses on developing and supplying advanced cell chemistries and battery packs & chargers to 2W and 3W OEMs. ARACT is also working on developing up to 15 kWh LFP batteries for 3W, medium voltage packs up to 20 kWh for LCV applications, high-voltage EV battery packs for 4W and passenger applications. Along with these, the ARE&M’s another subsidiary Amara Raja Power Systems is working on strengthening charging solutions. These chargers are compliant with IP67 rating, which certifies them as waterproof and dustproof, ensuring their durability and suitability for Indian conditions.

Q5: With rapid technological advancements in the power storage sector, how is Amara Raja prioritizing research and development to stay ahead of the curve? What are your key focus areas in terms of innovation?

In the ever-evolving power sector, we place a paramount emphasis on research and development (R&D) to sustain its competitive advantage. We are channelling significant investments into advanced battery technologies, particularly lithium-ion batteries, with a dedicated focus on achieving cost competitiveness and fostering indigenous production. Additionally, we are exploring the potential of other advanced cell chemistries for grid storage and stationary applications. Our commitment to innovation extends to researching next-generation technologies such as solid-state batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and metal-air batteries. In the realm of Energy Management Systems (EMS), we are actively developing intelligent solutions for microgrids and energy storage systems, integrating AI and machine learning for predictive maintenance and demand forecasting.

Our expertise in Microgrid Solutions involves designing and implementing advanced solutions for various applications, including rural electrification and off-grid communities, while also focusing on smart grid technologies for effective grid integration and distributed energy management. Moreover, we are embracing manufacturing automation through the implementation of robotics and automation for enhanced efficiency, quality, and safety, and exploring Industry 4.0 technologies for data-driven manufacturing and predictive maintenance. In the pursuit of sustainability, we are dedicated to developing environmentally friendly battery chemistries and recycling processes, with a keen focus on renewable energy integration and energy storage solutions for a cleaner future. Key initiatives such as establishing of a state-of-the-art E Positive Energy Labs — an advanced research and innovation centre — strategic partnerships with universities, research institutions, and industry players. Furthermore, our emphasis on intellectual property protection, actively filing patents for our innovations, positions us to maintain a competitive edge.

The Battery Energy Storage Systems has emerged as a promising space in the industrial and commercial segment in the last few years, particularly with massive Renewable Energy penetration. With our expertise in providing batteries for Solar/Renewable, we are carving out this business with a particular focus, and we have started making inroads. At India Rooftop Solar Congress 2023, 10th Edition, Amara Raja Batteries Ltd won as COMPANY OF THE YEAR – ENERGY STORAGE. This award is for serving India with multiple MWHr Installation bases with Advanced VRLA, energy efficient and lower TCO solutions for Rooftop & Mini Grid applications.

Jagadish M, Chief Technology Officer
Jagadish M has joined as Deputy General Manager in Application Engineering function in Amara Raja Batteries Limited in May 2005.
He has also undergone a General Management and Leadership Development Programme in Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. Jagadish has earlier worked with Amara Raja and rejoined us in the year 2005. He has done his graduation in Mechanical Engineering from Mysore University.
