Aerospace Industry Leader on Green Technologies
The COP (Conference of the Parties) 21 agreement, also called the Paris Agreement, set an ambitious aim of preventing global temperatures from rising 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels. At 2022’s Egypt conference, signatories affirmed the pledge.
Globally, the transportation sector accounts for about 16 percent, within which road transport is ostensibly the biggest contributor at about 12%, followed by aviation (1.9%) and shipping (1.7%). Aviation’s post-pandemic fast growth make it a sector under focus for the adoption of green technologies and innovation.
Rolls-Royce’s leadership in aircraft engines and power systems puts it in the pilot seat in the industry’s sustainability journey. On its part, Rolls-Royce has not only made sustainability integral to its vision, it has also backed its commitment to the decarbonization of its key markets. The recent launch of easyJet, the world’s first Hydrogen-power engine, the pioneering of the world’s fastest all-electric planes, and collaboration with Neste, the largest SAF producer in the world all testify to the company’s resolve to meet the sustainability goals.
The first conversation of the event was also its most significant one. Mr. Kishore Jayaraman OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire), Rolls-Royce President – India and South Asia spoke with our editor.

China, the leading EV-making country sold more EVs in 2021, at about 52 percent of global sales, than the rest of the world combined. Europe’s biggest auto market Germany sold about 72 percent more EV cars in 2021 than the year before. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that EV sales will hit an all-time high in 2022.
India’s EV story is no less exciting. India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) expects the country’s EV market to grow at a CAGR of 49% between 2021-2030. The nature of the growth in India, however, is different from the big EV markets. Most EVs sold in India are 2-wheelers, which account for over half of the sales volume. The next popular segment is three-wheelers which are not only making travel efficient and green but also providing jobs to a large number of people in the metros and the cities.

[Headline] Wings of Excellence
[Text] Not very long ago, global analysts estimated that air travel, among the worst-hit sectors during the pandemic, would take at least a couple of years to fully recover. Now it appears they underestimated the human capacity for hope and revival. International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) reports that air travel is fast approaching pre-pandemic levels. Air transport seat capacity and passenger totals globally have reached an estimated 80% of pre-pandemic levels, with passenger revenue at around 72% of its 2019 high point, said the agency.
India’s aerospace sector mirrors the global trend. The domestic aviation market in India is expected to grow to $30 billion, making it the third largest globally, says the International Trade Administration. According to DGCA, domestic air passenger volume grew y-o-y by over 64 percent in September 2022. All of this portends well not just for the aviation stakeholders but also for the larger manufacturing industry.
A modern aircraft engine contains more than 30,000 moving parts. It requires inputs from a host of industries like metalworking, machine tools, precision engineering, and optoelectronics. It has an even greater influence on virtually every sector, including services, with it being an early innovator and adopter of cutting-edge tech such as additive manufacturing, SAF, and hydrogen-powered engines, and digital-twin technology.
On Friday, 16 December, DMI Editor Aanand Pandey discussed with industry thought leaders the trajectory for India’s aerospace sector.

A Stronger Industry is an Inclusive Industry
Globally, economies have been put to test in the last two years. Be it manufacturing or services, all economic sectors had to face extreme demand and supply shocks during this period. It’s only recently that the engines of growth have started to fire up again. In India, the service sector is seeing a fast recovery according to a recent Economic Times article. The manufacturing sector is also witnessing healthy growth and expansion, but the industrial output needs to grow faster to meet the pent-up demand, as per the latest media reports.
Today, the Indian manufacturing sector stands at the cusp of a new phase of growth and optimism. Conditions are just right for the industry to increase its GDP share from the current level of over 14 percent. We have strong and fast-expanding consumer markets here and abroad hungry for growth and quality products, a supportive policy environment, a large and highly skilled talent pool that is among the most sought-after in the world, and a growing interest among manufacturing leaders in electronics, aerospace, and several other sectors to partner with Indian companies for value creation.
The concluding talk, excellently moderated by Gayathri Sharma, Head of communications- India & South Asia Rolls-Royce, was also one of the most engaging talks of the event. It covered a range of relevant topics like the scope for innovation, Mission Make In India, and ways to increase women’s participation in the workforce.
