INTELLIGENT AUTOMATION: A GAMECHANGER FOR INDIA’S MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
How intelligent automation can successfully address the efficiency-employment paradox.
Date: Wednesday 15 September 2021. Timing: 4:00pm to 5.30pm. Platform: Zoom
If there was to be an algorithm to decide the degree of automation one should deploy in one’s manufacturing facility, what should be its key variables? An informed guess should put at the top of the list variables like productivity, cost, labour-arbitrage, local regulatory policy, and the factors particular to the respective industry vertical. Such an algorithm, in addition to increasing the value-add, should also be able to successfully address, what one could call the efficiency-employment paradox, wherein the deployment of technology to increase efficiency leads to a loss of employment. Such a type of automation could be called ‘Intelligent automation’.
Intelligent automation does many important things at once. It takes productivity to the next level, provides big-ticket performance at a reduced cost, helps businesses compete in the global market, and as importantly, helps increase demand for high-quality, high-skilled jobs. Intelligent automation is a great example of technological innovation that could take India’s manufacturing industry to greater heights.
On 15th September, industry thought leaders will discuss how intelligent automation can help empower the Indian industry, generate high-quality jobs, and play an important role in helping us realize the goals of Mission Make In India. The talking points will be as follows:
Main Talking Points
- What is an intelligent automation? How does a manufacturer decide the level of automation that his factory or a particular production line need, and whether one needs automation at all in a labour-surplus country such as ours?
- How does intelligent automation lead to an increase in productivity – panellists could share facts, figures and examples from their experience and available literature about this.
- What impact intelligent automation has on employment and skill development – panellists could share facts, figures and examples from their experience and available literature
