IUTA and Green Elephant win second LABVOLUTION AWARD
Making everyday laboratory processes run more smoothly, increasing sustainability, improving efficiency and reducing costs – this is what the second LABVOLUTION AWARD was all about. The award ceremony took place on 10 May, during the second day of LABVOLUTION. Alongside the Institut für Umwelt & Energie, Technik & Analytik e. V. (IUTA), a manufacturing business was also awarded with the desired prize for the first time. The start-up Green Elephant convinced the jury with its sustainable cell culture system.
Hannover, Germany. For the second time, the LABVOLUTION AWARD honored practice-oriented laboratory improvements and for the first time, recognized an innovative product that improves the work and processes in the laboratory. An independent jury with experts from the University of Hannover, Geniu and the trade magazine Laborpraxis selected the winners based on the most convincing submissions. “I was really impressed by the range of this year’s submissions,” revealed jury member Prof. Dr. Sascha Beutel from the Institut für Technische Chemie at Leibniz Universität Hannover, and added: “This year’s winners convinced us with their outstanding achievements and developments in their respective fields.”
IUTA wins with workflow for customized cytostatic treatment
As part of modern treatment strategies – particularly in the treatment of tumors – therapy is increasingly adapted to the individual patient. This customized approach not only includes the selection of the medication, but also the highly time-consuming preparation of an individual dose by the pharmaceutical professionals in pharmacies and hospitals. IUTA performs quality control checks on these so-called cytostatic drug delivery solutions. “With the complete digitization of the previously paper-based workflow, transmission errors can be minimized. At the same time, automated data collection, evaluation and reporting saves time,” reports Max Jochums, research associate at IUTA. Another advantage of the digital workflow is the increase in safety by reducing the risk of exposure. Instead of two people, only one employee is needed in the cytostatics laboratory to check the application solution.
Green Elephant wins with sustainable cell culture system “CellScrew”
Another award was given to the start-up Green Elephant Biotech for their innovative cell culture system CellScrew, which is made from plant-based PLA. With CellScrew, the German start-up from Giessen developed a patented cell cultivation system for application in the biopharmaceutical industry. The novel cultivation system is not only made of a more sustainable material, but also offers users a significantly increased growth surface in comparison to a classic roller bottle with the same volume.
“We are delighted to be among the winners of the LABVOLUTION AWARD 2023 and hope that users will choose our solution in the future to improve their environmental footprint and efficiency,” said Joel Eichmann, co-founder of Green Elephant.
The winners were presented with a bouquet of flowers by Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Managing Board of Deutsche Messe AG, as well as a prize to optimize their day-to-day work in the laboratory. Each of them will receive consulting services and further training offers tailored to the laboratory world from LABVOLUTION AWARD collaborate Geniu.
